We all know the phrase, “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” What power is more absolute than the power to take a life? None of us wants to believe that we will succumb to that corrupting power, and yet every single day, people who thought they would only use that power for good, find themselves taking their own life, or the life of someone they love.
Wouldn’t it be wise to stick with love, and leave the power of life and death to God?
In the Baha’i book of laws, we are told not to carry arms unless essential. There are few situations in the USA where that would be the case.
Looking at the big picture, promoting gun control and ending gun violence will require more than just shouting at each other. It requires education. The facts show that owning a gun does not make you safer, it puts you and your family at risk. At the same time, the fear than inspires the desire for a gun, and the sense of power that a gun gives you are both corrupting influences on the soul. Fear breeds hate. Power breeds the desire to control others. This is true even if the gun is never used.
