The miracle is not that roses are beautiful.
The miracle is that we can tell that they are.

One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is an appreciation of the incredible beauty of the world around them. And the best way to do this is to talk with them about the things that you find beautiful.

Take the time to point out the flowers in the meridian of the highway, the way the light hits the trees in the late afternoon, the rainbow the oil makes in the puddle.  Be specific. Use words like light, color, contrast, balance, and harmony. Ask them if they like it too. When you speak out loud about beauty, your children will become comfortable pointing out the things that they find beautiful.

Appreciating beauty helps us slow down, develop a sense of wonder, and find the beauty in ourselves. Knowing what others find beautiful tells us volumes about them, and a shared love of beauty creates strong emotional bonds.

Plus, seeing things as beautiful feels really good.

The power of finding beauty in the humblest things makes home happy and life lovely.     — Louisa May Alcott

Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.                       — Marcus Aurelius

From Appreciating Beauty to Creating It

Kids who appreciate beauty in the world will naturally be driven to explore creating some of it themselves. Color is an essential part of that exploration. Every child has their own sense of which colors are their favorites, and which go well together. When those colors have meaningful names, like Beautiful BluePatient Purple and Playful Pink, then they begin to internalize relationships between them. They associate creativity and beauty with positive character traits. These associations can last a lifetime.

Adults Like to Be Creative Too

Of course we have coloring books for kids, but you also deserve some relaxed creative time to make something beautiful. Our adult coloring books combine meditative mandalas with virtues affirmations. You will get lost in them and resurface to discover you’ve made something beautiful.

You are never too old to enjoy coloring.

The following images were colored by my 92-year-old father. This one is called “Friendly.”

Every other page is an illuminated virtue name.
This one is called “Compassionate.”
