This shirt is sure to start conversations with the growing number of people who see themselves as spiritual, but are unhappy with the organized religions they know.
This shirt is in no way intended to suggest that the Baha’i Faith is not an organized religion. The shirt is, as it says, an invitation to talk – and so I encourage you to use it as an opportunity to listen. Ask them about their understanding of spirituality. Ask them what they see as the difference between spirituality and religion. Ask them what they would like to see changed in religion to make it more conducive to spiritual growth.
The response I would recommend would be “I often feel the same way. If you were to keep the best parts of religion and drop the worst, what would they be?”
In the process, you might discover that many of the things they dislike about religion are not present, or not as important in the Baha’i Faith.
For example, we have no clergy. We have very few rituals. We encourage independent investigation of the truth. We accept science and reason. We don’t say that other religions are wrong. We are interested in both personal spiritual development AND making the world a better place.
When I met my first Baha’i, I was very spiritual, but did not believe in God. They said, “that’s OK. We don’t believe in the same God that you don’t believe in.” It was that openness to my “shocking” beliefs that allowed me to become open to what they had to share as well.
And even if the people you talk to remain adamantly against religion, that’s OK. If you listen with sincerity and respect, and offer them love and support on whatever spiritual path they are on, you just might make a friend for life. That would be pretty nice too.
