I Am Not White – One Man’s Journey from Whiteness to Oneness
(I would propose an alternate subtitle:
How I Became a Woke Warrior, and You Can Too)
The author, Richard Pellegrino, is one of my Baha’i heroes and greatest inspirations. Three years after becoming a Baha’i, I was travel-teaching in the 5-Year Plan goal state of NY, and found myself in Saranac Lake NY. Richard (Richie at the time) had single-handedly opened a small storefront Baha’i Center in hopes of forming a Local Assembly before the Olympic games in Lake Placid. He audaciously put up a sign in the window saying “Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Classes on the Baha’i Faith.” He then began to teach – keeping copious notes on index cards of everyone he talked to in this little town. If I remember correctly, they got their Assembly.
Now fast-forward 47 years. Richard has put this same level of dedication and organization into becoming a warrior for race unity, peace, and social justice. If you are interested in doing some real concrete work in these areas, I can’t think of a better person to learn from. This book tells his story, and offers practical advice for how you, too, can make the world a better place.
