But many people resist the idea of forgiveness because they don’t understand its true nature. They confuse it with acquittal, which involves ignoring or denying the hurt.

Forgiving others simply means that you no longer feel a twinge of anger or pain when you think about the person or event that hurt you. It does not mean that you’ve decided that the person isn’t guilty (though it might). That would be acquittal. It especially does not mean that you leave yourself open to being hurt again.

At the same time, holding others accountable does not mean that you have the power to change their behavior or even their attitude. It just means that you have a right to protect yourself and others against future harm.

The magic of forgiveness doesn’t just apply to others. Forgiving yourself means that you no longer feel a twinge of guilt or shame when you remember your own actions. It does not remove your obligation to make amends. Choosing to make amends when possible is where some life-changing magic takes place.
